Mt. Zion church was first organized in 1869 at the Iowa Schoolhouse about 2.5 miles northwest of the present site. Ten years later the Mount Zion Episcopal Church was built at the present location on land received from M.D. and Sarah Houston. On July 1, 1906, it was rededicated after remodeling, adding the present rostrum and Sunday School room. The old church faced south and had a door in the north. The bell tower is thought to have been removed in the early 1930’s after leaking made it difficult to repair. The full basement was added in 1957 and provides a lovely place for gatherings.
Many a memory can be relived as families gather from all over for Easter Sunrise Service, the homemade ice cream socials, basket dinners or the annual Lord’s Acre Sale, which began in 1951 and is held the last Saturday in October. The very special Christmas Eve Program is held each year unless snow blocks the roads. Records show it was cancelled due to muddy roads in 1941 and because of snowdrifts in 1982.
Pastor Kathy provided pulpit supply in 2023 and became our official licensed local pastor in July 2024. This is her second career, after retiring from a 30 year career in business. Kathy lives on the farm where her family has been raising cattle for over 100 years.
Dale has faithfully and prayerfully served the church as Council Chair for more years than we can count! In addition to his many duties, Dale makes sure the air/heat is turned on each week prior to worship and/or other events. In his spare time, Dale uses his musical gifts to entertain skilled nursing residents and occasionally performs during worship.
Tyena is a life long member of Mt. Zion and has worn many hats within the church. Currently, Tyena leads a very active United Women In Faith chapter here at the church. She does this in addition to running her own business in Macon (D-Zines by T Flower and Gifts).
